Dynamic Dar es Salaam is the economic capital of Tanzania and its largest city. Strategically located in a protected bay off the Indian Ocean coast, the city, which was once a small fishing village, has undergone significant modernisation and in recent years, established itself as leading commercial hub in the East African region. Today its bustling harbour is the main port in Tanzania. Most diplomatic missions, as well as non-governmental organisations are based in Dar es Salaam having a strong presence in this bustling metropolis, which is also buzzing with restaurants, shops and office buildings. Remnants of German colonial presence can still be seen in the landmarks and architecture around the city. Popular tourism attractions include the National Museum and the open-air Village Museum, providing insight into Tanzanian tribes and their history, as well as St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the White Father’s Mission House, the Botanical Gardens, old State House and many colourful markets. Tanzania is renowned for its stunning nature and wildlife and Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve, located 7km north of the city, is blessed with great snorkelling and diving sites, as well as beautiful beaches, secluded islands and many varieties of marine species.
